Insights in text linguistics from theory to practice

Insights in Text Linguistics. From Theory to Practice is an introduction to major theories of text linguistics. It presents different views on standards of textuality as well as some activities for students.

The book offers general considerations of text as an object of study, accompanied by methods of investigating text. Each of the standards of textuality is examined in detail. Yet, priority is given to the standard of cohesion because it is easier to analyse and students should be aware of the fact that cohesive devices used in texts are language-specific. Apart from that, as there are differences between English and Bulgarian in this respect, some references to the two languages are made.

The book also provides students with key issues to consider based on the theory presented. It offers a number of activities in which texts from different styles, genres and registers are presented. Thus, students can see how text is organised around standards of textuality. One of the texts is analysed as regards cohesive devices so that it can serve as a model for examining other texts.

Insights in Text Linguistics. From Theory to Practice is written in a reader-friendly manner and is aimed at students of English Studies and Applied Linguistics as well as at anybody interested in the respective topics. Hopefully, the book can help students develop an overall view of text linguistics as it presents some essential knowledge in this field. The sample texts and the analysed materials should facilitate students' work with the exercises.
