Numismatic Collection of the Regional Historical Museum at Blagoevgrad (Ancient Skaptopara). First Part

Coin Collections and Coin Hoards from Bulgaria - Volume IV in series. Greek, Thracian, Macedonian, Roman Republican, Imperial and Provincial Coins from the 5th Century BC to the 5th Century AD.

An extremely large number of site find coins are known from Skaptopara and, most : articular, from its fair/market place - over 1 .'.000 pieces (registered up to early 1990s). A rreliminary account of the coin finds from the ste was first given in 1988 by D. Y. Dimitrov. A number of coins from Skaptopara are kept m Blagoevgrad Museum but they remained unpublished so far. Others, which entered the numismatic collection of the Historical Muse-?n at Kyustendil, are now published. Earlier coins from Skaptopara include:

• Hemidrachms of Parium and Thracian Chersonese, ca. 400-330 ВС;

• single coins of the First Macedonian Re-aon, Philip V, Amphipolis, Pella, Thessalon-Macedonian autonomous bronzes of the century ВС, depicting the river god Strymon, as well as some barbarous imitations of the same type.

• Roman Republican coins are represented as follows:

- Anonymous Republican As: halved, 169-158 вс (Cr. 198/B) [Kyustendil, no. 2461, acquired 1988];

- Anonymous Republican As - intact, again dating of 169-158 вс (Cr. 185/1) [Kyustendil, no. 2542, acquired 1989];

- Uncertain Republican denarius, ~150-110 вс, Rev. Dioscuri galloping to г., in ex. ROMA (Cr. ?), [Kyustendil, no. 2471];

- denarius of Mn. Cordius Rufus, 46 вс (Cr. 463/3), [Private collection, Pernik];

- 'legionary' denarius of Mark Antony, 32/1 вс (Cr. 544/18, leg V,) [Kyustendil, no. 2319];

Roman Imperial coins:

- 3,732 Roman coins from the period 1st to the 5th AD (the large majority - 3,123 pieces (83%) date to the 4th-5th century;

- 140+ coins of the period 1st - late 4th c.AD;

- A hoard of billon radiates of Gallienus and Claudius II.

All of this indicates the existence of a regional commercial centre of considerable significance in the region of todays town of Kocherinovo that existed from the 4th century ВС through to 19th century.
