The Medieval town of TRAPEZITSA in the Light of New Archaeological Research

On September 14, 2006, Holy Cross Day, the Ministry of Culture announced the launch of a thirty-year program for the comprehensive research, conservation, and public presentation of Trapezitsa, the second most significant fortress of Bulgaria’s medieval capital. This represents the largest state project for the old capital of Tarnovo, with a thirty-year horizon; ambitious endeavor has been carried out by the Veliko Tarnovo branch of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences over sixteen archaeological seasons.

The Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo, which manages the archaeological reserve, has played a vital role in attracting investors and donors, expanding infrastructure, and supporting the gradual opening of the site to the public.

This volume provides an excellent illustration of the researchers’ productive work and the undeniable potential of Trapezitsa for scientific research, as well as its role as a key destination in cultural tourism, seeking to sustain lasting and growing interest among visitors not only in Bulgaria but far beyond its borders.
