Veliko Tarnovo is located in the central part of Bulgaria, 241 km away from Sofia, at the foot of the Balkan mountain range. Fantastically put up along the meanders of the Yantra River, the town is picturesquely situated on and around the historical hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, Sveta Gora, and Momina Krepost. The numerous Tarnovo houses, looking like they are on top of one another, have piled on the steep river slopes extremely densely, filling out every free spot to the very waters of the Yantra River. The balconies above the river and the small yards are full of greenery and color.
