Bulgaria is one of the oldest countries in modern Europe that has preserved and developed the ideas about statehood and traditions from the 7th century AD to the present day. Established at the geographical and political crossroads between Byzantium and the Barbarian world, the Bulgarian state has stood against foreign expansions, despite the calamities of time. Its development in a multi-ethnic environment, tolerance and the creation of a distinctive culture through interaction with different cultural models are at the heart of its sustainable advance.

The beginning of the exhibition leads to the steppes of the Black Sea area related to the appearance and spread of the ethnonym of Bulgars and to a unique find consisting of almost 800 golden and silver objects associated with the personality of Khan Kubrat. The Danube Bulgaria has combined the ancient traditions of the new settlers Bulgars and Slavs, as well as the local Late Antique and Christian culture. Each of the metropolitan centers - Pliska, Veliki Preslavand Tsarevgrad Tarnov correspond to the requirements of the Bulgarian state at the specific time. The exhibition emphasizes the role of Medieval Bulgaria in the preservation and development of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabet systems and the activity of the educational schools.
