The Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel

From the mid 16th to the late 18th centuries Arbanassi enjoyed a privileged status, which was the basis of its remarkable economic and cultural prosperity. Christians of different ethnicities inhabited the settlement - Bulgarians, Albanians, Wallachians, Greeks and Serbs. Greek was the language predominantly in use. The education in the village was very well organized. The Orthodox Church had a long-lasting prominent influence in the life of the population in the settlement. As a result of the church politics, Arbanassi became one of the most powerful Christian centres during the period of the Ottoman domination. For about a century and a half seven churches were constructed in the settlement: the Church of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, Nativity Church, St. George Church, St. Athanasius Church, St. Dimiter Church, the Church of the Assumption, St. Nicholas Church, which were later on enlarged, reconstructed and decorated: the Church of Archangels Michael and Gabriel is one of the most notable among them.

The church is situated in the Southeast part of Arbanassi. It is in the middle of a large yard, most of which is actually a necropolis. The graves in that necropolis are marked by stone crosses and gravestones. Written evidence indicates that the church was part of a convent.
